WELCOME to helensung.com. As the dog days of the NYC summer continue to wax and...wax(?), may this find you somewhere beautiful with family & friends...and listening to great music of course!
- The date is set! Many thanks to those who have asked regularly about the release of Helen's live recording at the Jazz Standard. The release date is Sept.14, 2010, on Sunnyside Records! A snapshot of music on-the-move (it's live!), she offers up her distinctive brand of soulful, sophisticated music played with a stellar band: Seamus Blake (sax), Eric Harland (dr), and Lonnie Plaxico (b).
- It was an incredible honor for Helen & her trio to be a featured artist participant at this year's Aspen Ideas Festival in July. An annual gathering of global thinkers, movers, & shakers in everything from government to media to science to poetry to nanotechnology to literature to jazz (yes!), etc. etc. it was a huge inspiration to move and work among such fascinating people.
- Helen is also thrilled to be a part of drummer Terri Lyne Carrington's brand new recording project Mosaic. The group will perform in Japan in September 2010 at the Tokyo Blue Note Jazz Club & Tokyo Jazz Festival.
- This summer found Helen working at the Litchfield Jazz Camp in Kent, CT, for the first time. From bassist Avery Sharpe's "Boot Camp" morning exercise routine to midnight runs to the Pizza Garden to the dozens of incredibly talented jazz students and fellow artist-teachers, plus loads of combo classes, theory, masterclass, and performance, it has been a very inspiring time and a great learning experience.
- What’s new, what’s next? YES...it's coming! Helen's live recording at the Jazz Standard - the evening would not have been the same without your beautiful, enthusiastic presence. Also, a highly anticipated trio session for Steeplechase Records (voted 2009 Best Record Label by All About Jazz!) is slated for January 2011 release.
- As it's said, good news travels, and Helen may be coming to a venue near you. Keep up with her itinerary »
- Helen’s recordings are available for sale, as well as appearances on Lonnie Plaxico's release Ancestral Devotion, Richie Goods & Nuclear Fusion's Live at the Zinc Bar, Ronnie Cuber's Ronnie (Steeplechase Records), and on North Coast Brewing Company's Brother Thelonious Quintet CD! Creator of the excellent Brother Thelonious Belgian Ale, NCBC is a worthy company that also supports the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. For purchase info read on »
